My wife fears that with guns at home, the children might find them and shoot themselves or others accidentally out of their curiosity and ignorance. That is certainly a valid concern coming from a mother’s point of view! Although I’ve assured her that guns can be locked in a safe, there’s still that element of danger. For example, what if you forget the lock? What if you forget or just plain got lazy to put the gun back in the safe? Her fear seems reasonable. I have seen documentaries in which children played with a real gun as if they were regular toys and pointed it at each other or to themselves — even with parents who have been active in educating their children about the dangers of playing with guns! (The environment was purposely setup with a gun left out, emptied of bullets, to see how children in the experiments would react) Most of these small kids failed the experiment, and for some of those who knew better because of what their parents taught them and appeared to do the right thing, they eventually gave in to pressure from other children. Scary, right? Then of course, there’s the morality issue that some people contend with.
So the question now becomes… what else can you do then to protect yourself or your family without the risk of anyone getting killed? The traditional pepper sprays can be used for protection, but you have to close in the distance for it to be effective. Stun guns can be used too, but you’ll have to have actual contact with the person to use it. For many people, a pistol or rifle still seems to be the more reasonable choice since you can shoot from a safe distance and have stopping power to any home intruder.
No Real Lead Bullets Used with the SALT Non-Lethal Self-Defense Gun
The SALT non-lethal gun tackles all those concerns above. The SALT gun does not use any real bullets that can kill someone either on purpose or by accident, hence, it is called a non-lethal gun. It uses these non-lead spheres as bullets, which explodes in a cloud on contact.
Here is one of the spherical bullets in my hand so you can get a better idea…
Here’s another look…
You can shoot from a safe distance, far away from the immediate grasp of the intruder, and still have a chemical type of stopping power when the “bullet” hits and explodes and disperses its powdered contents, incapacitating an unwanted intruder with enough time so you and your family can run away to safety. This chemical cloud is no ordinary powder; it’s engineered to temporarily cause blindness and lung constriction to give you the ample time you need. If bullet contact is with the body instead of surrounding object, it’s going to hurt like a paintball gun but should not be able to penetrate the body and kill someone. Seems like a safer, yet effective, alternative if you ask me!
For an additional fee, you can order an extra set of bullets — whether a set of bullets for practice shooting or a set of loaded spherical bullets for real protection. By the way, I think it’s great to have an option of practice bullets being made available so that you can first get accustomed to using the SALT gun. The practice bullets are colored differently to avoid any confusion. It’s blue and white, rather than blue and orange (at least, this is the case with the starter kit that I received). Don’t get this mixed up, or you’ll have a funny, unpleasant surprise if you target practice on the wrong one. LOL!
To be on the safe side, I’d advice target practicing in an open area (probably in the backyard) just in case you accidentally load the real bullets.
There’s a safety push button on the SALT gun and they’re labeled on each side for easy reference. Push button on one side for safety, and push the button on the other side when you are actually ready to fire.
The above photo also shows the 3 circular “windows” on the handle, which allows you to see the bullets inside as they are loaded.
The included manual provides a good detailed step-by-step instruction on how to get setup, with graphics detailing the important parts of the gun. The back of the manual includes troubleshooting instructions, in case there are any problems firing or other issues that might come up.
The important part to me is that you need to have CO2 cartridges and bullets available at all times, or this would be a pointless self-defense non-lethal gun if you’re missing what you need to make it work. It uses 12oz CO2 cartridges, which are also available here.
Approximately how big is the gun? The video above will probably give you a better idea. However, here’s a photo with a ruler so you can get a grasp of the length of this thing:
