I am slowly building up the smart connectivity of our home, one plug or switch at a time. I’m starting to realize that the automated functions for having a smart home adds to a lot of convenience. If you are looking for a smart plug, the BN-LINK Smart WiFi Outlet is one to consider.
BN-LINK Smart WiFi Outlet Review: Features
There are a couple of options to consider in a smart plug, but one thing I like about the BN-LINK Smart WiFi Outlet is that there is no need for a home hub to be installed. Although a home automation hub would be a good idea to tie all smart devices together, being able to run this device without one works for the simple purpose I need it for. Besides, if I need a centralized option to control devices, the BN-LINK is compatible with Alexa — which is already a sufficient “hub” for me. That is another positive feature, if I need that option. But the fact that I can run this without being connected to Alexa or another home automation hub is already a plus for me. It’s just a matter of downloading the app to my Android phone.
Installation was a no brainer for me. You can choose between 2 apps to control the BN-LINK: the “Century Smart” or the “Smart Life” app. I’ve used Smart Life in the past, so that’s what I chose.
The included manual will guide you through the process. If you are starting new, there’s only about 5 simple steps. Since I have already installed the app before, I only had 2 steps to complete to connect each plug. I was up and running in no time. After being connected, I plugged in my lamp and I was able to turn it on and off through my smartphone. You can also turn the lamp on manually by pushing the button on the plug itself — so you are not limited to the app if there’s no need for it. The light on the device will turn reddish hue if it is on, and bluish when off.
The BN-LINK Smart WiFi Outlet came as a set of 2, so I was able to use one in another part of the house. I have our table lamps connected to them for ease of use and automation when we are not at home.
Another awesome feature of the app is that you can monitor the power usage for each device that is plugged in to the BN-LINK. You can get an average summary for the month, as well as view the power draw currently. It is very useful to be able to see these stats. If you are trying to save money, you can check out which electronic devices draw the most power.
