I’m a do-it-yourself (DIY) kind of person and have had the pleasure to experiment with multiple technical projects in the past. One of the latest projects I’ve had is a 12V solar power generator system to power up my electrical tools when I’m working in the garage or doing yard work. It was a great project, but needed the additional boost of having accessories such as USB ports to charge my smaller electronic devices and a 12V DC power socket to power up my DC-enabled tools and devices. The EZYKOO Do-It-Yourself DIY Dual USB and Car Power Charger Socket Outlet provided just the right accessory to complete my solar generator project.
When you first receive it, make sure it arrived complete with everything that’s supposed to be part of the package. You should be able to find the following when you unbox this:
- 1 x Dual Car Cigarette Lighter Socket Splitter 12V 2.1A 1A Charger USB Power Adapter
- 2 x Wire with Fuse
- 4 x Terminal Connectors
- 4 x Fuse 10A (2 installed)
- 4 x Screws
Just connect the negative and positive wires as shown. I used zip ties to keep the positives and negatives together so that the wires are less messy. For simplicity’s sake, I’ve wired the EZYKOO Dual Car Cigarette Lighter Socket Splitter and USB power adapter directly to my battery source. The solar panel is connected most of the time, so I’m not worried about power draws. I did have to make some modification because the circular end terminal of the EZYKOO was a little smaller to fit my battery bank’s screw terminal. Good thing I had some leftover alligator clips from a previous project, so I just connected the EZYKOO to the alligator clips, which then connected to my battery bank’s screw terminal. This worked without a hitch! The EZYKOO has a small bluish/purplish LED light that will turn on when hooked to the battery.
The fuses are an excellent safety component to ensure excess amp spikes that can damage the system or your devices. It is definitely handy to have 2 additional fuses included if the pre-installed ones are blown in the future.
There are 4 pre-drilled corner holes so you can secure it snugly to a flat surface. The screws are included, but you may need to use your own screw depending on the material you’ll be mounting this on. Again, in my case, I just wanted to keep it simple for my homemade garage solar-powered generator, so no major drills were necessary.
The good thing about this accessory is that it is marine grade, so you can use it for other purposes — such as in your boat, or other areas where it may be splashed with water. The USB outlets and power socket both have a rubber-sealed cover for that extra protection from water splashes when not in use. Of course, you don’t want to submerge this in water as in any other electrical component.
